The Rural Theology Association (RTA) is led by a dedicated and experienced Executive Committee, each member deeply committed to the study, practice, and advancement of rural theology.

Together, they bring a wealth of expertise in ministry, theological research, and rural community engagement. Their shared passion for rural theology ensures that the Association remains a hub for theological reflection and practical support for rural ministry and mission.

Our Executive Committee

Our President, The Rt Revd Dr David Walker, Bishop of Manchester, brings extensive experience in rural ministry from his time in the Diocese of Worcester. His research into ministry in rural dioceses, culminating in his book God’s Belongers, underscores his commitment to reflective practice in rural theology.

The Revd Canon Professor Leslie J. Francis, has been a leading voice in rural theology for decades. His pioneering research and numerous publications, including his role in establishing Rural Theology, have significantly shaped the academic and practical understanding of rural faith communities.

As Secretary, Tessa Metcalfe brings a unique perspective, having combined her background in leadership and change management with theological training. Her deep appreciation of rural ministry is rooted in her personal experience of village life and commitment to pastoral support.

Journal Editor Canon Dr Neville Emslie plays a vital role in shaping the discourse of rural theology. His work in ministerial formation and research into clergy wellbeing, vocation, and discipleship enriches the association’s engagement with the challenges and opportunities of rural ministry.

Membership Secretary and Treasurer The Revd Canon Dr Christopher Rutledge brings a sociological and psychological approach to rural ministry. His research into clergy personality and burnout provides critical insights into the realities of serving in rural parishes.

Committee Member The Revd Dr Tania Ap Siôn is a researcher and practitioner with a deep focus on prayer, sacred places, and the role of religion in rural communities. Her academic and ministerial work explores the lived experience of faith in rural settings.

Committee Member The Revd Robert Barlow has dedicated his ministry to rural parishes, serving as Rural Officer and Agricultural & Rural Chaplain. His ongoing involvement in rural Worcestershire ensures a practical and grounded approach to rural theology.

Committee Member Jeremy Martineau is a renowned advocate for rural Christianity, having played a pivotal role in national rural policy through his work with the Archbishop’s Commission on Rural Areas and the Arthur Rank Centre. His vision for sustainable rural ministry remains a driving force in his work.

Committee Member The Revd Heather Fenton has spent decades immersed in rural life and ministry, from serving as a Diocesan Rural Officer to founding the Country Way magazine. Her lifelong engagement with rural communities and environmental issues continues to inform and inspire her work.
